If you are seriously thinking about or trying to fall pregnant, there are many things you should be doing to get your body in good shape to best cope with both the rigours of carrying a baby and to give your bub the most chance of being healthy. Aside from the obvious of cutting back (even quitting!) the smokes, not drinking alcohol and eating a balanced diet, you should be making sure you get a good amount of folic acid every day.

What is folic acid? It is a type of water-soluble B vitamin that is found naturally (in the form of folate) in green leafy vege’s such as spinach and kale and citrus fruits and juices. Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate and is added to enriched grains such as breads, cereals and flours. It is important for women to be getting enough of this vitamin before and during their pregnancy as it helps to protect your baby against neural tube defects – the most common of these being Spina Bifida. Other defects that can occur are anencephaly (severe underdevelopment of the brain) and encephalocele (when brain tissue protudes out to the skin from an abnormal opening in the skull). The hard thing is that these defects actually occur in the first month of pregnacy, which is before a woman actually knows she has a bun in the oven. So if you are planning your pregnancy, then you are fine, start taking some folic acid now, but also tell any of your friends who are of child-bearing age – as we all know…accidents do happen! You don’t have to sell it to them based on the benefits of it through pregnancy either, it is actually a very important vitamin – it helps produce and maintain new cells, is needed to make DNA and RNA, helps prevent changes to the DNA that may lead to cancer and also helps to prevent anemia.

If you are concerned that you wouldn’t get enough of this vitamin to support your pregnancy, then visit your local health store and grab a good quality supplement, or if you are taking a multi-vitamin specifically for pregnancy, then make sure it has a good amount of folic acid in its composition. The daily recommended intake for adults is 400 micrograms. Pregnant women should be looking at getting between 400 and 600 micrograms per day.

Get into those leafy greens – they are a gold mine of the best vitamins and minerals that your body needs to keep you and your baby healthy!

Now that my son is 2 years old, my husband and I are thinking of having another baby, and I have to admit, I am totally hoping, praying and crossing all my fingers and toes that I have a girl. When we went for our 20 week scan when I was pregnant with my son, and were told that our little peanut was in fact a little man, I struggled to hide my disappointment. I got over it pretty quick though and brought myself back to down to earth with the realization that he was healthy and growing well. Plus, now that that I have him, I wouldn’t change it if I could – boys are big balls of mischief and fun (even though the clothes are no where near as cute as the little girls ones!).

But now that we are considering having a second baby, my thoughts drift straight to how I can increase my chances of having my little girl. I have been talking to a few women online who have tried different things and have had mixed success, but I was put onto ‘How to Choose the Gender of Your Baby’ by Ashley Spencer. From reading about it from different sources and talking to people who have read it, I have just downloaded it (gotta love the instantaneous-ness of shopping on the Net!). What makes it a goodie, is that the author has done a lot of research on the various methods of naturally influencing a baby’s gender and gives a thorough run down of everything that has proved successful for the greatest majority of woman around the world.

If you are like me and would like a shot at choosing your baby’s gender, click here and download the ebook from Ashley’s Website.

Oh and if you do, keep a journal of what you do and when you do it, so that you can see for yourself what worked for you… and if you get a chance, let me know – I would love to compare notes!

If you are trying to conceive or have already had a baby, you will probably be aware of the many different methods and techniques to try when attempting to fall pregnant, such as timing your cycle, special diets and even room temperature when ‘doing the deed’. But something that often gets overlooked is how you go about the act of baby-making itself. Amazingly the position that seems to bring in the best results for the majority of couples is, the tried and true, missionary position. Yep that’s right folks, if you are getting it on in the bedroom specifically to make babies, you are best to keep it simple (i.e. no acrobatics this time!). Of course, I’m not saying that you aren’t going to fall pregnant by engaging in other creative positions, but statistics show that you definitely increase your chances with the missionary.

These statistics don’t seem to suprise scientists, as apparently, considering the biology behind the process of conception, it is logical that the missionary position would have the highest success rate. It allows the deepest penetration, which puts the sperm right near the opening of the womb. If you are wanting to mix it up a bit, doggy-style or entry from behind is also a good one, for the same reasons.

They have actually done MRI studies on people having sex (can you believe it?!), which prove that these two positions result in the penis reaching the area between the cervix and the walls of the vagina – obviously this is what you are after to give you the best chance of falling pregnant.

At the end of the day, go with what works for you – there are no set guidelines, but it is only logical to avoid positions that defy the laws of gravity, for obvious reasons which I’m sure you can work out Enjoy!
